Spring 2012, Győr, in the gentle south of Hungary.
As twilight falls, the old town slips into a spell that words can scarcely contain.

Squares adorned with statues and steeples glow with golden reflections, while century‑old lampposts stitch shimmering patterns across the stone façades. Silent women drift along the cobbled lanes, trailing long shadows that glide languidly over ancient walls—soft caresses laid down by time itself.

Night advances, slow and velvety, wrapping the city in a hush so deep it feels almost eternal, until the first blush of dawn quivers on the horizon. Then, when the sun rises in the east, GyÅ‘r will breathe again—lovelier, and more in love with life than ever before.

Art Criticism Title: Night in Gyor Code: AC00S3 – Anno : 2013 Switzerland, Artist: Alessandro Cardamone Technique: Acrylic on canvas Style: Contemporary Cubism / Symbolic Surrealism ________________________________________ Formal Analysis The painting Notte a Gyor stands out for its chromatic and structural intensity. Cardamone develops a compact, dense composition that places the figure at the center of an evocative nocturnal setting, interpreted through a personalized neo-Cubist grammar. The forms are broken down into angular and polygonal planes, yet reassembled with visual coherence, harmonized by gentle curves and a nocturnal palette of deep blues, grays, blacks, and golden accents. The architecture of the scene, though deconstructed, suggests an urban frame—perhaps an interior, perhaps a mental space—where night becomes both time and space for reflection. The figure, possibly female, is rendered with strong contours and a clear tension between flatness and depth. The surface treatment is uniform yet vibrant, enriched by transparency and overlapping layers of color that imbue the canvas with a subtle but present inner light. ________________________________________ Symbolism and Interpretation "Night" here is not merely a temporal condition, but a state of the soul. The central figure is portrayed in a moment of introspection, seemingly listening to what surrounds her—or what arises from within. The pose—gathered, introverted—and the vacant gaze evoke a sense of emotional and meditative suspension. The background, fragmented but not chaotic, contains totemic presences and barely hinted symbolic shapes: arches, masks, spirals that suggest other worlds, ties to the unconscious, to memory, or to myth. The absence of realistic details reinforces the dreamlike, suspended atmosphere: the Hungarian city of Gyor, referenced in the title, is not described but transformed into a mental space, a psychic landscape where night acts as a filter for introspection. ________________________________________ Influences Cardamone clearly draws from the Cubist tradition—particularly from Picasso's synthetic Cubism and the stylized language of Juan Gris—but filters these influences through a contemporary, more lyrical and narrative sensibility. There are also echoes of expressionist symbolism and metaphysical painting, especially in the use of color and in the construction of a rarefied, imaginative space. The nocturnal tones and sense of suspension recall certain pictorial passages by Paul Klee or even Marc Chagall, though reinterpreted in a restrained, more introspective rather than fantastical key. ________________________________________ Critical Evaluation Notte a Gyor represents a moment of deepening in Cardamone’s artistic journey, where the narrative dimension becomes more subtle, poetic, and silent. The strength of the work lies in its ability to evoke without describing, to suggest inner worlds without ever closing them into a fixed meaning. The stylistic coherence, the balance between geometry and lyricism, and the refined handling of chromatic light confirm the artist’s maturity. The central figure becomes a point of meditative tension, a mirror of withheld emotions—not expressed, yet present—like the dense quietude that only the night can offer. ________________________________________ Conclusion Notte a Gyor is a work of extraordinary poetic intensity, translating the language of Cubism into an emotional and symbolic key. Alessandro Cardamone demonstrates a rare ability to fuse form and feeling, structure and dream, offering a personal vision of the night as a space of consciousness. A painting that speaks of silence, listening, and inner transition—through a mature, vibrant, and profoundly human approach to painting. Art criticism Title: Night in Gyor Code: AC00S1 Year: 2013 – Hungary Artist: Alessandro Cardamone Technique: Acrylic on canvas Style: Neo-Cubism / Contemporary Abstract Figuration ________________________________________ Formal Analysis This work by Cardamone emerges as a powerful and evocative synthesis of the neo-Cubist language, in which the geometric fragmentation typical of Picasso’s Cubism is reinterpreted through a contemporary, deeply personal sensibility. The nocturnal scene, set in the Hungarian city of Gyor, is reconstructed through fractured planes and multiple perspectives, intersecting in a visual interplay of depth and simultaneity. The human figures passers-by caught in a suspended moment are recognizable yet fragmented, absorbed into the architectural fabric of the city, composed of slanted facades, angular rooftops, and glimpses of urban space. Cobalt blue and deep violet dominate the palette, creating an atmosphere of silence and mystery, interrupted by accents of golden yellow and red that suggest artificial lights, signage, and illuminated windows. The brushwork, while precise and structured, softens in certain areas, almost dissolving the boundaries between architecture and figure, between real space and emotional perception. ________________________________________ Symbolism and Interpretation The title Night in Gyor situates the scene in a real-world context, yet the composition conveys a more intimate and visionary experience. The fragmented forms may represent the layering of urban memory buildings and faces merging like overlapping recollections. Stylized eyes, a recurring motif in Cardamone’s work, here become inner beacons, silent witnesses to nocturnal life. The chromatic contrasts the blues and violets of stillness against the yellows and reds of energy allude to the dual nature of night: a space for introspection and, at the same time, for movement and vitality. The absence of linear perspective and the multiplication of viewpoints create a mental landscape, rather than a traditional cityscape. ________________________________________ Influences The influence of Pablo Picasso and analytical Cubism is evident in the geometric construction and the simultaneous use of multiple perspectives. There is also an echo of the nocturnal expressionism of certain Central European artists, as well as a chromatic sensitivity reminiscent of Fauvism for the emotional intensity of the color. The use of luminous planes and softened contours reveals an affinity with contemporary graphic art and illustration, while retaining the physicality of acrylic painting. ________________________________________ Critical Evaluation The work stands out for its ability to transform an urban view into a sensory and psychological experience. Its compositional complexity does not compromise clarity; on the contrary, it invites the viewer to visually navigate the scene, discovering details and relationships between forms and colors. Cardamone succeeds in merging structure and lyricism, translating the Cubist language into an emotional key in which the city becomes a living, pulsating organism. ________________________________________ Conclusion Night in Gyor is a work that engages in dialogue with historical Cubism while renewing it, transforming urban observation into an emotional narrative. Through an intense palette and a construction that is both rigorous and poetic, Cardamone offers a vision of the city as an interweaving of architecture, memory, and perception. It is a painting that unites solid artistic roots with a contemporary and personal vision, confirming the artist as an original voice in the European neo-Cubist panorama. ________________________________________ Exhibition Note This work, exhibited in numerous European countries, is part of the collection hosted by the Hong Art Museum in Chongqing, China, from November 2023 to March 2024. Art Criticism Title: Night in Gyor Code: AC00S2 Year: 2013, Switzerland Artist: Alessandro Cardamone Technique: Acrylic on canvas Style: Neo-Cubism / Contemporary Abstract Figuration ________________________________________ Formal Analysis This work by Cardamone stands out for its visual strength and evocative character, presenting a nocturnal scene reconstructed through a neo-Cubist pictorial language. The composition, dense and intricate, unfolds horizontally like a fragmented visual narrative, articulated through multiple planes and simultaneous perspectives. Stylized yet recognizable figures emerge from an imagined urban landscape—more suggested than described. Architectural elements such as domes, windows, and rooftops are broken apart and reassembled into a complex yet harmonious geometric structure, where curved lines soften the impact of traditional Cubist angularity. The color palette is dominated by deep blues, purples, and blacks, punctuated by flashes of yellow and white that resemble moonlight or artificial lights reflecting on wet surfaces or glass. This chromatic construction conveys a mood of silence and suspension, characteristic of the nighttime. ________________________________________ Symbolism and Interpretation Night in Gyor is more than a nightscape—it is a meditation on the city as both a psychic and metaphorical space. The human figures appear immersed, if not trapped, within the urban fabric, as dreamlike presences or drifting memories. The city is not merely a place, but a condition of the soul: labyrinthine, multifaceted, fragile. The reference to Gyor—a Hungarian city rich in history and cultural layers—deepens the symbolic resonance: an Eastern European night steeped in silence and memory, serving as a backdrop for reflection on the individual and the passage of time. The illuminated windows and fragmented faces suggest a humanity that lives in shadow, in discretion and contemplation. The contrast between architecture and figure, between geometric rigidity and organic form, evokes the tension between structure and feeling, between society and inner life. ________________________________________ Influences The painting clearly draws from both analytical and synthetic Cubism, especially the work of Braque and Picasso, but is filtered through a lyrical, nocturnal sensitivity reminiscent of Giorgio de Chirico and Central European magical realism. The use of sharp color fields, saturated tones, and suspended temporality also recalls the urban visions of Paul Klee or Lyonel Feininger. Yet, Cardamone transforms these references into a personal style—warmer, more narrative, and emotionally resonant. ________________________________________ Critical Evaluation Night in Gyor distinguishes itself through its ability to evoke a psychological dimension within an urban scene. The artist balances architectural composition with intimate narrative, structural rigidity with poetic vibration. The nocturnal color choices enhance the meditative tone, making the work particularly rich and evocative. Cardamone once again demonstrates his mastery of painterly language and his capacity to imbue formal details with symbolic depth. ________________________________________ Conclusion With Night in Gyor, Alessandro Cardamone presents a complex and quietly powerful work. It is a Cubist vision of night—one that speaks of cities, solitude, memory, and identity. The city becomes a space of the soul, the urban landscape a mirror of inner life. This piece confirms the artist’s stylistic maturity and his commitment to merging form and emotion, structure and symbol, through a pictorial language that is personal, distinctive, and profoundly contemporary. ________________________________________ Exhibition Note This work, exhibited in numerous European countries, is part of the collection hosted by the Hong Art Museum in Chongqing, China, from November 2023 to March 2024.
